Digital Bookmobile National Tour to visit Regency Park Library - 12/17/09!

Regency Park Library to Host Digital Bookmobile (Magic Bus) National Tour Event

The Regency Park Library, located at 9701 Little Road, will host a Digital Bookmobile Thursday, December 17 in the north parking lot from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This event invites the public to experience interactive demonstrations to learn how to download eBooks, audiobooks, music, and video! Developed inside a 74-foot, 18-wheel tractor-trailer, this nationally touring vehicle is equipped with broadband Internet connected PCs, high definition monitors, premium sound systems, and a variety of portable media players. Interactive computer stations invite visitors to search Pasco County Library System’s digital media collection, use supported mobile devices, and sample eBooks, audiobooks, music, and video. Patrons can take advantage of this download service 24/7 when they visit the library’s website: pascolibraries.org. They can browse the collection of best-selling, new releases, or classic titles, and check out a digital title with a valid library card. Digital files can be enjoyed on a computer or transferred to supported mobile devices. At the end of the lending period, titles will automatically expire and are returned to the digital collection; there are never any late fees or damaged items!

The Digital Bookmobile is a service of the Pasco County Library System and is operated by OverDrive, Inc., a leading full-service digital distributor of eBooks, audiobooks, music, and video.

Battle of the Bands Entry Forms Now Being Accepted!



Entries are now being accepted at any Pasco Library or by e-mail to pauls@pascolibraries.org. Bands ages 13-20 from any Florida county are eligible to enter!

This year's competition will involve 6 weeks of online videos in February and March of 2010, with viewers voting for their favorite band each week via our MySpace page, following by a live band battle at Crews Lake Park (16739 Crews Lake Dr, Shady Hills, FL 34610) on March 26th, 2010. Two different prize categories will be available this year. The top two bands of the online voting will receive $500 and $250 music store gift cards to buy instruments, repairs, etc. The winners of the live battle will get a recording package worth $3500 for first, $1750 for second, and $1000 for third at a local recording studio.

Friday, December 18th, 7:00-10:00pm: Teen Winter Dance in the Dark

Yes!  After hours events have returned and its high time we had another dance event...this time to celebrate the winter break from school and the end of the year, with all its holidays.  A professional DJ will spin some of the best dance music and all your requests with the lights off.  The dance is free and free glow sticks, food, and drinks, including our famous Monster Spiked Punch, will be available for everyone.

Congratulations to the Winners of our Teen Talent Show!!


Who knew the Land O' Lakes area had so much talent?  Wow!  We had 10 acts and over 50 people in the audience for the Third Annual Teen Talent Show held on Saturday, November 14th.  Here's our winners:  Palmer won 1st place and $100 for the second year in a row for her singing, guitar playing, and original music.  Dominick won 2nd place and $50 for his Broadway song from Jekyll & Hyde.  And 3rd place and $25 went to Amanda who performed a Broadway song from Wicked.  Congratulations again and thanks to all who participated.  See you next year!

ROCKUS MAXIMUS: BATTLE OF THE BANDS XIII LAUNCHING NOW!!!



Pasco County Library System's original Battle of the Bands ain't dead yet!  That's right, Rockus Maximus is coming back for another year with another round of live concerts and hilarious online competitions.

We need 8 bands once again to take the Rockus Maximus challenge.  Beginning December 11th and until December 29th, bands can register at any Pasco County Library location or online.  Entry forms and all the other Battle of the Bands information are available now.  Bands must have a minimum of 3 members with the majority of members under 21,  must play their own instruments, must have at least 2 original songs on CD, DVD, or online, and must have an online presence such as MySpace, Facebook, YouTube, etc.

FREE NEW MOON TICKETS AND SPECIAL EVENTS!

Have you looked for a book in our catalog but can't find it?  Never fear, FLIN is here!

FLIN is our new statewide borrowing network that replaces Alleycat.  And yes, this includes items in Hillsborough County!  AND, you can order items through FLIN right from the comfort of your own home.  (Please note: only books with a release date of 12 months or more, magazines and sheet music can be borrowed from FLIN, no media, audio or video.)

Just go to our website at pascolibraries.org, toggle your mouse over "Catalog/Research" and click on "FLIN."  You can now begin searching and requesting any items not found in the Pasco County Library System database.  Just follow the steps to get the item you need.

It's even BETTER than on-line shopping, because it's free!

Think you've got an usual, unique, or highly skilled talent?  Want to perform in front of people for a chance to win cash?  Then sign up for our Third Annual Teen Talent Show!  Single and group acts are welcome (up to 5 people), with just about any type of talent being accepted for judging...just keep it clean.  Registration will be limited to a maximum of 15 acts, so get your name in early.  Winners will receive $100 for first place, $50 for second, and $25 for third.  If you don't have a talent and you just want to watch the show, spectators are more than welcome.  Free snacks and drinks will be available.

Ever wanted to learn how to make a bracelet out of woven hemp?  Well here you go!  We will have all the materials available free along with instructors to show you the ropes (HA!) of using hemp.  If you want something slightly more robust, we will have a limited number of slots available to make chainmail armored bracelets.  As usual, we will have free snacks and drinks to keep you energized while you work.

Teen Costume Contest Winners

Thanks to all of you who turned out for our Costume Contest & Monster Movie event on Saturday. We had 18 entrants in our Costume Contest and over 40 people attended the event.


1st Place/Scariest $40 and 5 pounds of candy went to Adam who was well, just plain scary!
2nd Place/Scariest $20 and 3 pounds of candy went to Kaitlyn who was a Psycho Surgeon.

Saturday, October 24th at 2:00pm - Teen Monster Masquerade Costume Contest & Movie Day

 
We did the mash, the monster mash... Join us for our Monster Masquerade Costume Contest & Movie Day.  Come in your best costume and try to win cash prizes.  The Costume Contest will start promptly at 2:15 and we'll have two categories for judging:  "Most Unique" and "Scariest."  The first place winners will get $40 and 5 pounds of candy, and the second place winners will get $20 and 3 pounds of candy.  Full masks may be worn during the contest only, but face paint is allowed all day.  Afterwards, enjoy a monster movie with free candy, popcorn and soda.  You don't need to register to enter the costume contest, just show up!

Pascolibraries.org is proud to offer you TumbleBooks!  This incredible online database is available on our website 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  Use TumbleBooks to listen to some of your favorite stories.  Habla español?  You can even listen to books in Spanish or in French.  Ooh la la!

Check it out!  TumbleBooks has fun puzzles and games.  Mom won't mind that you're playing games when you use TumbleBooks!

Bring your shirts, socks, belts...anything white or light-colored to the back of the library for our Tie Dye Extravaganza! Who doesn't love CHOCOLATE? That's right - the Land O' Lakes Library is having a World of Chocolate event featuring all things chocolate.

Come on by Tuesday, September 15th from 6:00-8:00pm where you can taste all kinds of chocolates from around the world, share your thoughts, and indulge your sweet tooth. We'll also have a chocolate fountain with items to dip to test your culinary creativity. Video gaming will be set up following the event so you can use up the sugar rush on Rock Band 2, Guitar Hero, and Wii Sports Resort.

Saturday, September 12th, 2:00pm - Teens Draw Like Dali Art Class

Join us on Saturday, September 12th from 2:00-4:00pm when we'll discuss famous artist Salvador Dali and teach you how to "Draw Like Dali."

Ever seen the world of Salvador Dali? He was famous for his bizarre (insane?) paintings of surrealist landscapes covered in melting clocks and strange animals. Some say he was a genius…some say he was mad. Decide for yourself while you create art based on his unique style. Your work will be displayed in the library following the event for all to admire (if you want, anyway.) Check out some of his works on Google Images. Supplies and lessons will be provided free of charge, along with snacks and drinks

The Teen Advisory Board (TAB) helps the library determine all the great programs it should put on for the 11-18 crowd. TAB members earn community service hours just by attending meetings and offering their thoughts and opinions. Plus, members get to be the first to know about all the other volunteer opportunities available in the library. Free snacks and drinks are always served at meetings, so come hungry and be ready to have your voice heard! TAB meets on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays each month and we always have a full house.


This coming Tuesday is our first meeting with our new officers in place. We will be going over the Winter programs that you voted on and talking about fundraising and other volunteer projects for the Fall. Don't miss this if you want to lay claim to some service hours over the next couple of months.

We LOVE our Anime Club here at Land O' Lakes! If you're as crazy about anime as we are, join us on Tuesday, September 1st at 6:00pm to discuss manga, learn about Japanese culture, try foods from Japan and watch the latest in anime technology. Cosplay welcome!

For ages 11-18, Anime Club meets the first Tuesday each month. Snacks and beverages are provided. Club membership is limited so prior registration is required.
